So my dad bought this off FB marketplace. It’s an 82 diesel Vanagon, that a previous owner put a 1.9 mechanical injection turbo’d motor in it. They swore they had it running but couldn’t make it start when we looked at it. So we offered $700 to their $1500 asking price. They balked, ththen said $800. Sold.
My brother and I got it running. Always ALWAYS check that injection pump timing . But now we get to make it look nice.
Decent score for $800 IMO

That’s sweet!

NP as long you like slow. The interior in itself looks like more than enough project for most, but I’m happy for you. Good luck!

I just saw one of those with a Subie swap and it fucking dusted us.

Oh it won’t be quick for sure. But that 1.9td should miles better than the NA 1.6 that came in it... And yeah. There is ample work to be done.

I thought Vanagons were way higher priced than that. I say nice price!

Fond memories off these! When I was a kid, my grandparents had an ‘83 aircooled petrol version of one of these....I think that was the last year they offered air-cooled engines in them? We took it on long family summer vacation roadtrips to the USA several times. It was a very ‘80s shade of metallic brown...cool old thing. :)

Looks pretty clean and strai ght. I had a ‘84 turbodiesel Jetta. I think it was like 50 horsepower.

You’re thinking of the camper van versions. Those are indeed valuable. The regular vans? Not so much.

I think the turbo brought it from 48hp to around 68 or 70. Yeah, not great, but a noticeable improvement...

Yah. If it were a westy it would be a lot more.

Nice find! I still want a Vanagon of some sort, but I had no idea that you could still get one at a reasonable price.
BTW, I just spotted a complete Subaru SVX at a pick ‘n pull out lot last week. That might pick up the pace a little...

NP for sure, even if it’s still a lot of work!

Really? I just checked auto trader. Only half a dozen or so listed for sale. One for $600, then it jumps to $12,500 to $52k (crack pipe).
Either way, that sounds like it’ll be a fun project.

Yah a nicely done non-westy can get 10k or so around here(like done nice. Prolly nicer than I have the attention span for) and 15 to 20 for a westy. Find a synchro, and you can try to get 30+...

Right on! That's how much I got mine for & this one looks to be in a little better shape.

But probably about 150 ft/lbs of torq..... still a slo-poke even with the turbo....... just my guess

This is fantastic

You'll want one of these for turnpike sprints on windy days since its overall form invites help from gusts. I traveled in a Va'Naggin' in '83 returning from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and a rudder would have been of use that day in March. It was harrowing to say the least.

I think the 1.9 turbo diesels were actually not that slow when compared to other VW busse s. If I remember correctly t hey make roughly the same horsepower as the bus version of the 2.0 type 4 engine while making noticeably more torque.

At $800 it’s a steal. Well done !

So relatively much tork for the amount of horsepower?
